Interview With Cool FD

Straight out of Orleans, France is talented producer and radio show host Cool FD.  He is a producer I believe that people will be talking about in the near future.  His love for hip hop goes back to when he was a young kid listening to artists such as Nas.  Solovibes kicks it with Cool FD as he speaks about his radio show "Independent Coolness", how his music was featured on Jack Thriller's 16 or better Cypher Series, working with Don Streat, Macabeats and more.

Sincere:  What made you decide to get into music and who are your musical influences?

Cool FD: I first used to rap when I was a teenager and a lot of dope albums coming from the U.S. amazed me, especially on the musical aspect. "It Was Written" by Nas really made my day when I decided to learn how to build this type of street but musical sounds. I had no idea how to do it but I knew that was my shit.

With that said, you can easily guess that my music is soulful and boom bap. But I'm looking to the future too.  Dudes like Marco Polo, Jake One, Audible Doctor really inspire me currently.

Sincere: What are your weapons of choice when you're working on a track?

Cool FD: In regards to my beatmaking process, it's all in the sample choice. A good sample is that one with the particular mood and deep energy is the fundamental of a classic. Then the drums are important too, but the sample is everything. To me at least.

Sincere: You have released a project with Macabeats titled "Pardon My French" and have released some songs with Don Streat.  What made you decide to work with these two talented individuals?

Cool FD: Don Streat is the first artist from Baltimore that I've been in contact with.  It is now 3 years that we've been working together. I discovered him on the internet with his dope "Rapper Shot" single featuring Termanology and Lil Fame, produced by Illmind.  I had a radio show and was like "damn, this emcee is hot !"  I reached out to him. Now we brothers. You know the deal : Bmore 2 France, Bare My Soul ... and a lot of new shit comin soon ! Then Don Streat introduced me to S.O.N. and Macabeats. To sum up, I decided to work with them because they're dope. Period.

Sincere: Lancecape recently released the "Significant" track for Theo3, Korry Deez and Adam Bomb, which is a very good record.  However, you were responsible for remixing their song.  Are you happy with the response so far?

Cool FD: I'm a huge fan of the Toronto hip-hop sound. They got that hunger for more. That raw type of sound. I like it very much. So when I see that Lancecape dropped such a dope track and the opportunity to remix it, I jumped on it! It is really a sign of respect to their amazing work. And yeah, the response is very good, even from the emcees and Lancecape themselves!

Sincere: Your tracks were featured on Jack Thriller's Cypher Series that can be seen on YouTube.  How did you get involved with that project?

Cool FD: One of my contacts made it happen. She called me one day and told me to "send me some beats for a cypher!".  That's what I did and now I got these beats getting numbers on YouTube. Shit is crazy. Hard work pays off in this hip-hop game... By one way or another, you always got something in return if you work hard everyday.

Sincere: Recently, you have started your own radio show in France called "Independent Coolness."  What made you decide to start your own show and how can artists contact you to get their music submitted?

Cool FD:  Because I'm a fan first! A fan of independent hip-hop music and always looking for new upcoming artists. I think I need that type of positive competition. And of course, I like to share with the world my discoveries.  Overall, I want indie artists to have their own voice among the radio stations around the world.  If you have hot shit to submit ? Holla at me here: independentcoolness@gmail.com

Sincere:  Lyrics were a big must in order for an artist to be respected back in the day.  Unfortunately,  some artists don't care about lyrics as they depend on great production and a cheesy hook.  Do you feel that hip-hop has taken a decline in creativity?

Cool FD:  Listen to Independent Coolness man ! Dudes are so productive and talented ! That's not our fault if the TV ain't got that type of behavior.  We do have it. So let's build our own legacy and let's keep showing that hip-hop never took a decline.

Sincere: Are there any artists or producers from France our fans in the States should be checking for?

Cool FD: Definitely Alterbeats, Bankai fam and DJ Brans.

Sincere: If you had the chance to work with one artist who would it be?

Cool FD: Termanology for the MCing and Frank Dukes for the boards,...I need his samples!! You already know!

Sincere: Rakim vs Big Daddy Kane...If these two legends battled in their prime who would be the winner?

Cool FD:  The G.O.D. ! Don't ask me why!

Sincere: Outside of music, what is a regular day like for Cool FD?

Cool FD: Taking care of the kids, working, and making beats at night every day.

Sincere: Do you have any final thoughts and how can fans reach out to you?

Cool FD: Yeah I wanna thank you for this dope interview and for the opportunity to have my voice be heard. Mad luv to all your readers, holla at me on www.coolfdbeats.com!
