Interview With Shore Shot
The garden state has a lot of talent and still flourishing. New Jersey native Shore Shot fits the bill and is no stranger to the microphone. Shore Shot has opened up for perennial MC's such as Masta Ace, Inspectah Deck, Smif-N-Wessun and Maino. With lyrical cadence and stage credibility, Shore Shot also shows his humanitarian spirit supporting families affected by Hurricane Sandy. With two previously released albums, Shore Shot has made a name for himself. Now with his latest release "Return of the Tide" Shore Shot is a force to be reckon with. Shore Shot talks with Solo Vibes Music about his new album, his lyrical repertoire and other projects in the works.
TyDJCJones: What’s going on Shore Shot? For those who don’t know who you are, tell them who you are and where you’re from?
Shore Shot: Truly blessed to be here first and foremost so thanks for having me. I’m an emcee from the garden state of New Jersey.
TyDJCJones: How do you get the name Shore Shot?
Shore Shot: It was the name of an AAU basketball team I used to play for.
TyDJCJones: Your album just dropped “Return of the Tide”. You got a heavy list of producers from Cool FD, to !llmind, to Eric G. Tell us how did you put the album together?
Shore Shot: I’ve known Cool for a while and this past year he kept pounding my email with beats. I had to grab several. He’s super talented, always grinding, and he’s a great dude to work with. He’s really doing his thing between his radio show, production, promotion, etc. Cool is international and he's put my music on different radio stations throughout the world so he produces in more ways than one. !llmind I met mutually through my bro, a great friend of the fam/radio host/promoter/ A.b. !ll’s in a band and A.b used to air it on his show @ Rutgers Univ back in the day. I got to link up and record w/ !LL at his studio in Brooklyn. He was playing me beats he was sending out to some major artists at the time. I felt privileged to have the inside scoop and be there to work with him, see his process, and have that experience. We shot the video for ‘point spread’ on a brooklyn rooftop and had the song and the video finished in a few visits. He’s a humble guy doing some incredible things so I was fortunate for the collaboration. Eric G, I met at the Beat Society in Philly. I was taken back by his sound, got to chop it up with him shortly outside the venue, and the rest is history in the creation. He’s real chill and his productions are one of a kind.
TyDJCJones: You have been out for a minute, dropping hot material. Are there any differences between the three albums you dropped: Slowly but Shorely, Progress Report and The Return of the Tide?
Shore Shot: No question. I think there’s a big difference between the production on ‘slowly but shorely’ and the production on the ‘return of the tide’. The production on the Return is better, however, there’s a determined lyric throughout both albums. ‘Progress Report’ I feel is an album by itself. You can’t really categorize or classify it. You can put 5 different songs off of it on 5 different radio formats and that’s one of the best things about it.
TyDJCJones: At what age you started rapping and realized you wanted to make a career of music?
Shore Shot: I was rapping ever since I was a little kid. My pops showed me who Kool Mo Dee was early. My Mom was all Motown, Beatles, and gospel. My older brothers introduced me to so much hip hop music I became addicted in grammar school. I would walk down the street from school to the local record store, “Soundwaves” and collect cassettes.
TyDJCJones: You hosted Cool FD’s Independent Coolness 31, one of the hottest radio shows in France and he also laced a beat for your album. How was it working with Cool FD?
Shore Shot: Cool’s an incredible dude. His work ethic is intense, his production, radio show, and promotion is on point. He’s always keeping hip hop up, and he’s a blessing across the board.
TyDJCJones: You also received a communications degree in college. Let me take a guess, you were a radio show host in college?.
Shore Shot: I sho was! I had a show called the Thursday Night Throwdown. I’d play all my favorite records, air out my own tracks at the time, and invite other acts to come in and rock out.
TyDJCJones: As we all know, New Jersey was hit by Hurricane Sandy a couple of years ago. You're basically minutes away from the shore. You even did a track and a video in reference to the Hurricane Sandy victims titled “Sho Love”. Are there any differences in Jersey now compare to three years ago?
Shore Shot: I see more progress on the commercial side than the residential side, and I also see FEMA threatening to garnish peoples wages if they aren’t reimbursed for however much money they provided each homeowner with. It’s a sore spot for me when I look at how much damage the storm did to families. No matter what though, we remain ‘Jersey Strong’.
TyDJCJones: I noticed you’re versatile on your music. The middle school chorus on “Sho Love” to laid back tracks like “Long Way” to an aggressive track like “Point Spread”. Do you see yourself as a creative artist that steps out of the box?
Shore Shot: Absolutely. When you work with hip-hop producers as well as musicians and singers, different genres begin to bleed into others automatically.
TyDJCJones: Has your upbringing in Jersey influence your choice in rapping?
Shore Shot: I believe it has a great deal. Being so close to the source of it all and listening to greats like Redman, Naughty by Nature, Lauryn have all inspired me a great deal.
TyDJCJones: If an artist listen to your work and wants to collaborate with you on a track, what do you look for in an artist?
Shore Shot: I look for their work ethic.
TyDJCJones: Where do you see yourself in a couple of years?
Shore Shot: Doing shows internationally.
TyDJCJones: Any other producers or artists you want to work with that you haven’t worked with yet?
Shore Shot: I would love to collaborate with the Roots. Producer wise … DJPremier, Pete Rock, No ID, E-Sermon, Lord Finesse, Havoc, 9th Wonder, S1, Marco Polo, Apollo Brown, Black Milk, Cardiak, Khrysis and plenty more.
TyDJCJones: Thank you for taking to conduct this interview. Do you have any final words or shoutouts and how can fans or artists find you on social media?
Shore Shot: Thanks again for having me I appreciate all the love shown. My instagram is “shoresTruly”, my twitter is @shoreshot.
