Duck Down BBQ 2016 Recap

Last year in 2015 was my first time going to the Duck Down BBQ. A lot of things were different in 2015 as it was my last time seeing Sean Price before his passing, and I knew things would be different at the bbq this year.

After a few opening acts, we got to the scheduled artist on the bill, some that I had previously seen a few weeks earlier such as Afro who performed with producer Marco Polo. When I first saw Afro I was new to him but was impressed by his flow and his fast rhyme style and the control he had. I don’t think this was the audience for him though cause they did not give him the reaction he deserved, despite his set being great.

Chelsea Reject also performed and her music was good. I’ve never heard it before but it was very upbeat and energetic and all of the songs she performed I liked. She also brought out Dyemond Lewis, formerly of Pro Era. I’m glad to see more females performing and she’s a really different look for Duck Down’s roster.

The main part of the show started off with Rockness and he performed Operation Lockdown, and Bernadette filled in to recite Sean’s verses as she stood on stage next to her and Sean’s daughter. The crowd loved it and it was reminder that while Sean may not physically be here anymore, he’s always here in the eyes of the people and his family.

The rest of show, at least for myself had a different vibe because Starang Wondah was in the building and the crew got to perform songs like “No Fear”, “Leflah” and "Sound Bwoy Burial” with Smif-N-Wessun and Top Dop of OGC. It’s always nice to see the crew on stage along with their family cause that’s what it’s all about. The family on stage, in the crowd and hip hop in general.
