New York Comic Con 2019 Show Recap

Another year and another New York Comic Con in the books. I don’t know what it was but the event felt way bigger this year from an attendee perspective. It didn’t matter what area I was in, the show floor, the main hall, artist alley or the famed cosplayer area near the food trucks, it was always packed. Word of mouth has always spread throughout the years on how fun the event is but it never ceases to amaze me how many ask me about tickets, even a week out from the event not knowing they’ve been sold out for months. That time of year is here and New York Comic Con is in full effect.

The show floor as usual was packed with aisles selling various products like comics of course, funko pops, statues, collectible figures, video games and so much more. The normal companies that attend such as Marvel, DC Comics, Chevrolet, and Bandai Namco all had new products to sell or game demos to try out for upcoming releases. Comic Con season is also around the peak of gaming release season so you could try out the latest Call of Duty or head over to PlayStation and check out some of their VR offerings coming out in the new year. DC also had a display below the main floor showing off costumes from the upcoming Birds of Prey movie starring Margot Robbie who made a surprise appearance at the DC Booth on the last day of the show. You never know who will stop by and she took a massive picture with many of the Harley Quinn cosplayers at NYCC.

Outside in the parking lot area the food trucks were lined up and the crowds were long as the trucks provide an alternative to the food served inside the Javits Center. The area also doubles as what I call cosplay alley. Here is where you will find photographers set up with their lighting kits against the walls doing photoshoots with any of the cosplayers that also hang out in the area. If you as a photographer or just a regular attendee are looking for a particular cosplayer, chances are you will find them outside in the parking area at some point doing a photo shoot. It’s a great place to take photos and mingle will different cosplayers without being in the way of people walking the main areas of the con.

The panels at NYCC were a mixed bunch but included some heavy hitter such as the Angel 20th reunion panel, an All Elite Wrestling panel complete with a brawl between Chris Jericho and Cody and a Stan Lee panel playing tribute to the man, the myth, the legend himself and it even included a special appearance from Charlie Cox, star of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix. Also downstairs not too far from the panels area was the autographing area where major Hollywood stars like the cast of Angel, Paul Rudd and Billy Dee Williams were signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans. If you were lucky, you might even catch a star not advertised just walking around the con as a fan as I did last year with Kevin Smith just hanging out in cosplay alley.

New York Comic Con may be my favorite time of year and I’m always sad when it’s over. As a fan of comics, movies and games, it’s a chance to attend a 4 day event with friends and catch up with everyone you’ve met over the years. The 4 day event isn't even enough time to do everything as depending on your interest you're bound to miss out on something. The wait is on for the next event but in the meantime the cons don't stop, see you later.
